Checking out The Badlands

Updated: Oct 21, 2021

Taking a different path from Colorado to Chicago than we had before paid off in some beautiful landscapes and hikes around the Badlands.

The first time we drove from Colorado to the East Coast and back, we went through the midwest by going through both Kansas and Nebraska. This time, We knew we wanted to see something new, so we decided to head north. We were so glad we did, cause South Dakota is rad!

Rolling Hills and Wild Terrain

One of the things we didn't expect when we set out through South Dakota was just how hilly and mountainous it was. We knew about the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore and all that, but we were surprised how similar that whole region felt to places like Fort Collins, CO with the mix of valleys, peaks, hills and grasslands. And then you drive into The Badlands....

Where did all this come from?!?

Like so many national parks, it takes a second between when you drive in and when you see the first of many things that just make you say "Whoa!" But once you come upon the chasm just past the entrance, you can't help but have your breath taken away. The closest comparison we could make was Bryce Canyon in UT with the similar wind and rain-eroded rock faces creating these bizarre peaks and ridges.

Where should we stay?

Cedar Pass Campgrounds

Great (and inexpensive) spot to stay in the Badlands so you can get in later or get up early and catch sunset or sunrise for amazing views and pics. Head to our maps page to snag its address or go here to reserve your spot directly from their website.
